Politics

I dreamed that none of the five good ballot measures passed (edited to add, there are six apparently, but I don't know what #6 is about. Okay now I do). No, not true. The second question passed, but the others did not, and I wept bitterly. In my dream, this part of voting came before the presidential vote, and I was suddenly full of fear (more than in real life).

Today I made my first pocket-facetime-call. Actually, it was Facebook video chat (message? Whatever...). But it was Isaac! There he was, suddenly, on my phone in a red shirt in front of a bookcase, drinking coffee out of a glass mug. It was so sweet to see him unexpectedly. I let Theo video chat too. I miss that boy.

I like the word "folks."

different from what any one supposed

some birthdays happened last week! first mark's, featuring pumpkin waffles for breakfast.

and then mine, which had more of a doughnut theme...

there were many other celebratory events, in addition to the consumption of waffles and doughnuts. there was pie, for example. and a feast at asmara. my gift from cousin-uncle meiklejohn was like my very own make-a-wish dream come true: foley for a day on his latest film. not to mention sweet emails, tweets, cards, gifts, lunches with friends, and book-of-faces messages, which i love love love. also, now, i am an even number of years, my favorite.

and on saturday i got a second feast, this one with my mom and dad at green elephant, and then a birthday hike up my favorite little mountain. it was far more treacherous than usual because it was wet -- think 1300 feet of slippery rocks coated with even more slippery leaves. but as usual, it was worth it when we got to the top ("like childbirth!" said my mom).

maman et moi.

mon papa.

(mark was there too!)

as a little birthday present to myself, i bought this poetry app for MYphone. it's called poem flow, and it's free for a limited number of daily poems that flow "in a gentle reading application" which is actually much more wonderful than that description makes it sound. it's a really organic way to read a poem. the words appear on the screen sort of in the rhythm you might read the poem aloud. it's nice. i bought myself three months' worth of extra poems.

pastiche

i've already mentioned this on the twitter and the book of faces, but i had such a fabulous dream last night that i just have to describe it again. in the dream, i came across a great blog called dismal pastiche.* i then proceeded to email a link to myself via my brain. it was like there was a built-in iphone. in my brain.**

*yes, dismalpastiche.com is available. and it's MINE!

**just to be a little more meta about it, i then woke up, grabbed my iphone from beside the bed, and emailed myself a description of this dream.

my favorite toy

playing around with MYphone -- i paid actual money (a dollar ninety-nine of it) to get this hipstamatic application. it makes cool old-style pictures, see? i love the rounded edges and square shape of the one below. it reminds me of a shoebox full of old photos.

photoshop for MYphone

i've been playing around with photoshop this morning, my favorite new (FREE) application. here is an altered photo of the wells nature reserve (the picture was gorgeous originally, but it's fun to fool around with the colors, focus, etc. i think this looks almost like a scene from another planet):

and here are some mums from the farmer's market this morning. i'm trying to do that miniaturizing thing, sort of (this really isn't focused enough in the center of the image to have that effect, but it's getting there. plus the colors are nice):

mistrial by iphone

i had a funny reaction to this article in the new york times today, which is about jurors screwing up trials by using their blackberrys and iphones to google defendants, twitter jury decisions before the trial is over, and make other smartphone-related infractions. so my first thought was, "would i do that if i were on a jury? would i blog and twitter and facebook-status about how the trial was going? lord knows i love to share the daily details of my life." then i realized no, of course i wouldn't, because 1) i am a huge fan of constitutional law and 2) i'm not an idiot and 3) i am a rule-follower. in fact, i tend to be a rule-follower almost to a fault, and sometimes i try to cure myself of it, for the sake of spontaneity and carpe diem, etc. (although actually i believe that it's kept many of my loved ones from mortal injury, and worse, getting yelled at). but if a judge frowned sternly at me over her judicial-looking glasses and instructed me not to go on the internets during the course of the trial, there's no way i'd disobey.

i've never been on a jury, or even called for jury duty. i'd actually really love to do it, and i promise to leave my iphone at home.

holga

here's a photo of boo with his new holga camera, taken via my brand new MYphone app, camerabag! go check it out, adam!*

*since you can't really appreciate fully the polaroid-style-ness** of this photo on my blog, go to flickr to see the various forms it can take with this application: holga-esque, 1972-style, infrared, etc.

**now you can totally appreciate the beauty of this camera-thing, and all it took was a change of background color. i was wrong, though, this isn't polaroid-style. i think it's actually "1972" style.

pano for MYphone

this is the first iphone application i've actually paid for -- you can take panoramic photographs with it, a series of four that line up all tidily. this is clearly a test shot, as it is merely my dining room. also, it came out really small*, hmm...

*this issue has been resolved, with help from my resident technical advisor!
