Blood is thicker than water

I was thinking about health today, and growing older, and drinking water or forgetting to. My parents are such good water-drinkers — it's part of their routine to get glasses of water before bed, and if I were an excellent host I'd always leave a carafe of freshly filtered water by their bed when they come to visit.*

Anyway, I was just drinking some water and thinking about water and dehydration and realizing that lately every time I realize suddenly that I haven't been drinking enough water, I think of this one phlebotomist who was disappointed in me because I was dehydrated and she couldn't find a good vein. But...phlebotomists love me, I thought. How can this be possible? "When did you last drink water?" she asked me, frowning. I was instructed to fast for twelve hours, so it had been twelve hours since I drank water. Still, I felt I'd let her down, and vowed never to disappoint another phlebotomist again.

*Note to self: add carafe to wish list. Also, filter

the hap-happiest time of year

firstly, your dog-of-the-day.

secondly, my family and i are not exchanging gifts this year (we're only shopping for kids, and yes, you're still a kid when you're nineteen). but i can't help hoping to find the following three items in my stocking:

isn't he the sweetest? look at that bite out of his ear. aw. i want him.

i know it isn't true, but i keep daydreaming about how my life would be perfect if only i had this sofa.

maybe santa will bring me some pretty little bird tattoos.

pirouette and flourish

a toast to the green grass and the warm sunshine. it is officially iced coffee season, at last. i met my friend mama d for coffee this morning, and we sat outside, although i kept my sweater on and sat in the sun and my coffee was of the hot variety. by the time we departed (two or three hours later), i had taken my sweater off and sweated a little bit and imagined that an icy drink would taste good. somehow it surprises me every year when summer really comes.

are you listening to bon iver? do you know how to pronounce bon iver?

the best iced coffee, still.

trattoria pasta salad from appetite for reduction. may i recommend it? the dressing is heavenly.

if i had $15,000 and had to spend it today, i'd buy one of these, hook it up to my car, and drive around the country for a while, how about you?

cold

my etsy pick of the day. this is a print by elsita, and i like it. although it's not quite accurate (no snow here in maine, and yesterday we felt a little hint of spring), it still kind of captures winter. and its endlessness. and its chill -- though she really should have mittens on! i wish i had a red coat.

covetous

i sorta want a pair of these bizarre russian boots. yeah, they're weird looking, but they were "designed by russian peasants 300 years ago." and they're supposed to be really warm, too. probably even warmer if you wear pants with them.
