Mitochondria hummed

Lovely things that happened today:

  • I stumbled across this podcast, 10 Things That Scare Me, via Brooke Gladstone's episode (she's a host of On The Media, one of my favorites). First of all, this was absolutely wonderful, and I identify so hard with many of her fears, especially her number one fear. Other guests include Samin Nosrat, Blair Braverman, and more of my favorites (and for some reason, Anthony Scaramucci?). Each episode is only about six minutes long.
  • Goat milk in my coffee.
  • I did some errands and ran into several people I like a lot and had nice chats with them.
  • I saw two corgis and two dogs in skirts at PetSmart. Then my cashier had a terrible black eye, gone all green and purple, and she cheerfully told me about how she'd ridden the family's ATV into a hot tub.
  • I'm on day five of basically no sugar, and I'm probably jinxing my plan to detoxify myself (specifically of sugar) (just for a couple of weeks) by mentioning it here, but I don't feel as crappy as I did last time I did this.
  • My cashier at Trader Joe's told me her 12 year old black lab is the best person she knows.

This would be my dream job if they allowed dogs and either Mark or I had a Coast Guard commercial boat operator's license.

my girl

is still job hunting (i don't think i ever told you the story of the job she had and immediately lost through no fault of her own). she's applied just about everywhere in this town, and i'm positive she'll soon land one.

we walked downtown together a couple of times this week, despite the heat. this barbershop will always make me laugh now, because of this.

the library = hours of free, air conditioned entertainment.

this book made me think of young billy joe isaac:

seriously, books are funny.

my girl is a little blue because max is leaving in one week for his farming adventure in spain. he'll be gone several months, and then in january the two of them will head off to india for their joint adventure. it's going to be very strange around here without him.

summer job

bean has been babysitting a lot this summer. her charge is this awesome baby, e:

here they are getting ready for a morning stroll from our house downtown:

and today boo is acting as assistant babysitter:

bean was a little nervous when she started this job, since e is the youngest baby she's taken care of. however, she has quickly come to really love hanging out with her, reading her books, pushing her around in the stroller, and feeding her cottage cheese. e's a sweet sweet baby with a silly sense of humor. i especially love watching bean and boo pushing the stroller down the street - they look like the nordic wondertwin babysitting team!

dream job?

Are you friendly, outgoing and physically active? Can you be all of the above while wearing a large Acorn costume?

news from the recession

524 applications for 15 jobs. this puts me in mind of a job that m applied for recently (he was one of 150 applicants). it was down to him and one other person, and the company decided in the end not to fill the position.

crave

i just had this incredibly specific, visceral craving for those homemade candies made out of fried chinese noodles and butterscotch. i don't even know what they're called, or exactly how they're made, or when the last time i ate one was. aha, here they are. they're not even one of my favorites -- i think it's more about the sweet/salty combination. when i was fourteen, i worked at a candy store called sweet street, where my favorite thing was dark chocolate covered potato chips. i can just taste exactly what these were like -- rippled, salty chips dipped in a thin, thin layer of perfect dark bittersweet chocolate. my friend holly, who worked there with me, wasn't so crazy about them as i recall (hmmm, true? i have this vague memory of feeling like a weirdo for liking them). that was my first non-babysitting job, and the woman who owned the store (her name, unbelievably, was NONDI) was so mean. she hired us under the table and paid us $2.50 an hour. i used to gobble gummi bears in the back room, and every once in a while, i'd sneak a truffle (her truffles were square, with thin layers of chocolate and hazelnuttiness). i remember she bought her chocolates "from a place in brooklyn." one terrible day, holly dropped a huge tray of chocolates. i think she got fired. my favorite thing about this job (besides stealing candy) was making color-coordinated easter baskets.

job hunting

taking a break from my current employment to check jobs online. what to think about this one? okay, aside from the location (a 3 1/2 hour commute), what do you suppose "mouse colony management" might be?
