half nested again

while this bird gets herself settled back into life at home,

spending time with this guy, and time alone, and time with friends,

oh, and digging through the box that finally arrived two months after it was mailed from china (minus many books, most of them illegal dalai lama contraband),

(max acting out his fury at the chinese government, below)

reviving the old scrabble club, meditating with the buddhists, making plans, eating delicious food, worrying about life a bit, taking walks, and reveling in clean-smelling clothing, comfortable beds, and western-style toilets,

this bird has flown to cambridge, where he's spending most of the month of july attending an architecture/design program at harvard design school.

so the boy is off to a great start, living the urban life with the coolest grandparents ever, commuting to harvard square, and designing things all day. he'll have a new project each week, and he's planning to come home on the weekends for some maine breezes, bike riding, frisbee throwing, and hanging out with friends.

above, his very own desk. below, something cool looking that he made.

so we're down one kid again, at least during the week. luckily we've got some extras from time to time, in max, adrienne, miss gliss, lilly, anthony, and more. stay tuned for the highlights of max and zoë's welcome home (maine-themed) party this weekend.

sundry

it's a foggy day, and there's rain too. but it's not thirty degrees out -- i don't know how many degrees it is, but my fingers tell me it's not thirty. though i did spend yesterday (though the sun shone) shivering with my hot bag of corn in my lap.

i took minnow to the vet, and he and i are like soul mates because he could stand to lose five pounds and his hips are a little stiff. only i don't cry like a baby when i'm having blood drawn from my furry arm. also, i read this article in national geographic while i was in the waiting room, about animal domestication. there are some amazing photos here, and now i'd like to have a domesticated fox as a pet. and probably an enormous pig, too.

there are adventures being had in china! gorgeous scenery, a bit of farming, cities and villages, interesting food, encounters with the police even. i will fill you in on details soon, but it looks like they won't be able to stay on their wwoof farm because the village is in a "military zone," according to the local police. i get the sense this is simultaneously not a big deal and kind of an official getting-kicked-out-of-town kind of thing. somehow.

i am finished with the writing portion of my freelance job, and now i'm getting paid to edit, and if you know me well you know that i LOVE THAT. editing = ♥

i came here a wanderer

just in case you hadn't noticed, there's a link over on the right side of this blog that says "where in the world is zoë?" i'm attempting to keep it updated, so on any given day you can click on it and see a map of where she is, or read something about it. i'm finding china more confusing than india (so many things don't come in english! and i don't know how to pronounce anything!), but i do know that today she is in yangshuo (no, i don't know how to say that), and that there are fabulous, other-worldly green hills there. max's blog has a first-day-in-yangshuo post up!

talk what you please of future spring

i suppose spring is coming -- the sky looks different, and the light in the morning and afternoon is warm. we had one really balmy day, as a little reminder that it's coming, and now the temperature is back in the 30s, as a little reminder that we live in maine.

this boy. here he is doing his h dubs (get it? homework? hw? h dubs?). he let me give him hugs yesterday.

the girl is hatching plans to leave india and go to china!

here's how to turn your computer screen into a game of katamari.

i made vegan chocolate-banana bread pudding, and not only was it delicious, but now mark knows that he does like bread pudding, despite its dubious name.

i've been watching the first season of big love (which i watched long ago, way back in the days of hbo).

i'm stitching something great.

my writing project continues for now, and i love both the writing and the excuse to sit here messing around on the internets all day.

i had the most fun dream ever.

giant rabbits.

unicorns are show offs.

sperm whales name their babies.

let's go on a rollercoaster!

see what i mean about messing around on the internets? in addition to that, i walk my dog friend, and i don't have to wear my snow boot shoes or shuffle like a little old man any more!
