Look at your feet. You are standing in the sky.

“Look at your feet. You are standing in the sky. When we think of the sky, we tend to look up, but the sky actually begins at the earth. We walk through it, yell into it, rake leaves, wash the dog, and drive cars in it. We breathe it deep within us. With every breath, we inhale millions of molecules of sky, heat them briefly, and then exhale them back into the world.” ― Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of the Senses

I find myself having my own vicarious travel experience--as I watch for Zoë online, track her plane flying over the Caspian Sea from Delhi to Frankfurt and then back again, imagine her adventures in Madurai, where she's now living with a wonderfully sweet host family--by obsessively watching multiple seasons of The Amazing Race on my wee computer.

When they go to India, I get teary-eyed.

Meanwhile, back in Maine, the sky turns to its subtle September tricks, traffic on the dog beach slows a bit, and some mornings and evenings there is this smell of fall in the air that makes me want to skip.

Isaac is going back to the Learning Shack for his senior year of high school, and everyone involved has mixed feelings about it. So there's a scramble to finish summer reading assignments and buy marble composition books and generally get ourselves in the right frame of mind. Okay, here we go!
