What is strange is that there is an exact moment where it becomes Dirty Dancing. I feel like the movie switched gears after the big confrontation at the house and went from being a somewhat sobering look to struggling with mental illness to "lets win the dance contest and fall in love."
I do love a Dirty Dancing-esque ending (as well as dancing in movies in general), but you're right--and that's when I thought, "Wait, this was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar?" Not that an Oscar means ANYTHING, but still it ended on such a light, Hollywood kind of note...
And it is about a character who has a pathological obsession with happy endings. (More so in the book, apparently;that is why he throws Hemingway out the window). Hollywood should not make movies about people obsessed with happy endings, it cuts too close.

I hear that the book is very different--sadder.

So, now I am not quite so eager to see this - though it might be a good double feature after Amour. I hear there's no uplift in that one :)
I just saw your testimonials - Ava K's is my favorite
I thought Cuckoo's Nest meets My Cousin Vinnie
