happy birthday, mom!

in honor of your birthday, they are tearing up the sidewalk in front of my house today.

but uh oh, they found a pipe that wasn't supposed to be there...

so they called the fire department and the gas company...

and eight tall firefighters and five guys from the gas company trooped down to my basement to see if the line was actually carrying gas, or if it was an old one.

they came in and out, one after another, several firefighters pausing to admire the chalkboard paint on the door in our kitchen.

this sort of sounds like a lovely children's story, doesn't it? let's hope it doesn't have a dramatic, explosive ending...
