in cold blood
this falls under the category of "books i was pretty sure i had already read, but it turns out i never did." it's a little embarassing that it took an oscar-nominated film starring the brilliant philip seymour hoffman for me to finally read it, but it was worth the wait. there are beautiful descriptions of desolate western kansas, and the people, their lives and relationships with each other, are captured with surprising sympathy and feeling (i think of capote as being so, you know, snobby). plus, i've never read a book before with action that takes place in OLATHE (where i attended first and second grades). i'm not sure i've ever even seen the word "olathe" in print before.
