sublime/mundane

above, lilacs from sweet artemis, who came by for a visit yesterday. they inspired me to cut some from our sole remaining lilac, a white one that leans precariously against the fence but smells so good.

below, my view from the car in the hannaford parking lot. i've been spending a disturbing amount of time at hannaford lately, due to my poor planning and lack of initiative. and being too lazy to do a full-out shopping trip. i can only decide what i want to make for dinner around five o'clock each evening, and back to the store i go. like a french woman off to the market, sort of.

musing

just a kind of thoughtful day. here are three of my thoughts:

1. "a new lease on life." what? my crazy brain keeps making this ="a lease on a new car." like, you only have it for two years or whatever, and you can't drive it too much and you're supposed to keep it pretty clean. and you pay $399 a month.

2. what is it, exactly, that people in portland, maine have against tourists? i really don't understand this. even if you disregard the money that tourists bring into the economy of a town like mine, what is it that's so distasteful about people who are lucky enough to be on vacation, and who have chosen - from myriad possibilities - your town?*

3. i felt kind of bad, but then i baked some cupcakes. and now i feel better. and i haven't even eaten any of them (yet)!

*this actually kind of upsets me - i imagine these happy tourists walking around admiring portland, completely unaware that all around them are natives narrowing their eyes, thinking, "pah! tourists!"

still alive

here i am, one week after the onset of my official bout of influenza, finally back to normal, or thereabouts. there hasn't been much to report in the last week besides coughing, sleeping with the aid of robitussin pm, watching crazy old movies on tv at three o'clock in the morning, my devoted nurse-dog, drinking tea and airborne and eating baked potatoes, and m shouldering the burden of kid transport, lunch making, and basically everything else.

while i was sick: it snowed, a lovely first december snow. also, two of my very best friends had birthdays (dancer lady and holly). my aunt and uncle lost their beloved old canine friend, za. a maine christmas wreath arrived in the mail from my dad, so fragrant that even i could smell it. bean and miss gliss edited their first radio piece for blunt. boo played in the snow with his friend leander. the annoying blondes were eliminated from the amazing race.

now, it's time to bring some holiday spirit into this house. i do my part by playing christmas music whenever i'm in charge of the playlist, and yesterday i even bought ingredients for a few kinds of christmas cookies. and please note my radio station over on the right side of my blog, if you will.
