the beloved community

yesterday, bean was one of the moderators of the beloved community event at usm, a belated mlk day/black history month celebration. about eighty percent of it was excellent: interviews with portland community leaders, readings of martin luther king's writing, and various student performances. there were a couple of cringey parts that will no doubt be edited out of future events, but bean did an amazing job hosting and interviewing. and the bates college gospel choir, the gospelaires, were fabulous.

Wish I could have been there! I was judging Poetry Out Loud, which also had some cringey moments. ;-)

i actually thought of you during one particularly cringey overwrought piece of poetry, and what i thought was how UNcringey your poetry is! and how you read it so beautifully, not in that...you know, POETRY voice. (this is all supposed to be complimentary, by the way. in case that's not clear.)

Sounds like a good event -- 80% awesome is pretty good for these types of things!

Hah, "POETRY" voice, I know exactly what you mean. I thought that Zoƫ did a great job (and she never got yelled at to speak in the microphone)

oh, that "speak into the microphone" lady was horrible, wasn't she?!
