i just finished reading sacred games, which my dad loaned me before christmas. i was completely absorbed in it most of the time i was reading, and it is a big, fat 900-pager, so i am feeling a little bereft now that i've finished it. it is a mystery/police/gangster novel that takes place in india, mostly in mumbai. it was really odd and fun (and a little confusing) to see slumdog millionaire at the same time i was reading this. when i read books that take place in india, even when they vividly illustrate the dirty, crowded, and dangerous nature of a city like mumbai, i always get hungry for indian food. i love when characters buy chai from the chai-wallah or eat homemade pakoras. i propose an indian theme to my upcoming oscar night party (confirmed guests so far = m, boo, and my mom) - i have a feeling that slumdog will be well represented at the oscars. who wants to come?!
