laika

i borrowed this book from boo, who checked it out from his school library. i hereby confess, it made me cry and cry. laika was a good, good dog who was launched into orbit (with no means of returning to earth) by the soviets in sputnik II and died four hours later. the story is an interesting, brief snapshot of the space race at the time, and it includes small details of soviet life as well as a kind of love story between laika and the people who cared for her.

There's a strong recurring reference to Laika in the movie "My Life as a Dog".
