one morning round about 3 am, i was roused from my bed by the sound of an engine (i imagined an oakhurst dairy truck) running at the stoplight outside our bedroom window. when i looked out, i saw six or seven firetrucks, a couple of ambulances, several police cars, and smoke pouring from the upper windows of the house across the street. mark joined me at the window, and we watched the scene for some time. in the morning, it was clear that there'd been a major, 3-floor fire, that pretty much gutted the house.
