dolls of my youth

this is baby alive. she had a mouth that moved robotically, chewing food and "sucking" on her bottle. i guess not only did she wet herself, but she pooped too. so exciting! i wanted her SO BADLY. but i never got her (not until i had zoe, a much less robotic baby alive whose insides didn't get gummed up and stinky). it made me a better person, no doubt.

this is sweet mary, whose brother was adam's doll (i can't remember his name). she wore a red and white gingham dress and a white apron and had a nice, soft body.

newborn baby tenderlove! i remember opening the package (was it from a great grandmother?) and being thrilled. i don't remember how old i was, but i know we lived in kansas, and i recall eventually forgetting all about her and discovering her naked body splayed out on the driveway one morning. much later, i should add -- i adored her intensely for quite a while.

the one and only dressy bessy, and adam had dapper dan, her brother, though he denies any memory of him! they were learn-to-dress-yourself dolls, all soft and raggedy but much cuter and with more style than raggedy ann et al. i love the circles for cheeks. i think she had a button, a zipper, a snap, and hair ribbons to tie.

i love sasha. you may recall the incident at the yard sale this summer...her brother was gregor, and yes, he belonged to adam. they were so handsome and had a cool, scandinavian style. they cost big bucks now on ebay!! sasha is the only doll i still have, and someday i will re-attach her head and limbs to her lithe, brown body... sasha and gregor wore thick turtleneck sweaters and jeans and corduroys.

bean's 13th birthday party

after games, dinner, cake, and presents (observe the lovely parasol that miss glissando got for bean at the garment district), the fete moved to milo, where nathan was taking portraits.

nathan works his magic

nathan and his fancy camera.

photo shoot

the party guests prepare for their photo shoot.

rock n roll

after pictures, the fiesta moved to benkay for rock and roll sushi. here is my black-lit napkin, with a hand upon it.

anyone with a squirrel costume

i spotted this in the "i spy" section of the portland phoenix personal ads (i continue to read "i spy" hopefully each week, although i suspect it's usually completely fabricated by the editorial staff):

squirrel

you were walking down congress street saturday night with a squirrel costume on. it's vital i find this person, or anyone with a squirrel costume like that! 845-5105.

in other phoenix news, scroll down to "best t-shirt to match your coffee."

tale of two portlands

i missed this article the weekend before last in the times. you should read it, if you haven't already! i have strong objections to one sentence: "portland's waterfront may have a disney feel, but there are some places to discover." what? portland, maine? disney? what is she referring to, exactly? the dead fish smell? the lobster boats? stray cats? aside from that glaring error, it's kind of an interesting summary of food in portland (i just skimmed the part about portland, oregon, cause who cares about that portland? ours came first, after all). it includes a reference to two fat cats bakery, scene of the cupcake consumption back when david came to visit. i need to go over there and see if they make carrot cakes, for bean's birthday party!

vertigo

i forgot to mention that while bean was cavorting in cambridge with miss glissando, we watched vertigo. i hadn't seen it for a long time, and boo LOVED it. i want to have a classic film festival, and stay up all night watching great old movies! maybe we'll start with hitchcock (we need to catch bean up). any suggestions for great hitchcock films? i think we're all in agreement that psycho is too scary for my babies.

goth girls

bean and miss glissando spent the weekend chez mana and pop. this is one of the photos my mom sent. it appears they've been taken someplace dark and cavernous (a crypt? an irish pub?), though they look perfectly content.

lil' stinker bear

what is it with these bizarre bears? this one "has a wireless remote that causes him to produce six different 'gassy' sounds, and his cheeks light up as he 'blushes' after each funny deed!" i'm probably even less fond of scatological humor than the average person, but this strikes me as a very dubious way to spend twenty dollars.

the evan's birthday song!

happy birthday to evan!! bean and her friend flora wrote him a lovely birthday song:

this is an audio post - click to play

lyrics:

today is evan's birthday
we're very happy about that
because it's really cool
it's really cool
cool cool cool.
we thought it was a sad day,
but it turned out to be happy,
because it's evan's birthday.
yay.

military surplus

boo and the artful dodger dressed in european military garb at milo. m is giving the artful dodger and his pickpocket sidekick drum lessons on saturdays. dodger likes milo, especially the hats.

date

bean and boo went over to their friends' house saturday night to play this dungeons and dragons-type game called GURPS. m and i snuck back off to duckfat.

you know how sometimes you're in a store or something, and a person next to you starts talking to you, thinking you're her friend who was standing there a minute ago, but who moved silently down the aisle without the person noticing? that happened to me today, except the person was speaking german.

in other supermarket adventures, a man bumped into me in the snack aisle where i was contemplating "pretzels? or popcorn?" and then said, "whiter owls! they need whiter owls in here!" and i thought, yikes, crazy, and only later realized he was actually saying, "wider aisles."

trick? or treat?

here is the weirdest item found in my troop's pillow cases, post-trick or treating. it resembles...something organic. on closer inspection, it appears to be coated with wood shavings. a few brave souls tasted it, and it was determined to be some sort of chewy ginger candy, but not particularly sweet.

halloween

we continued our tradition of bringing pizza over to dancer lady's house and then sending m and p out with the dressed-up ones. things were a little slow this year, with many porch lights off by 7:45, and not so many monsters about. m was a little bitter about it, but the kids all seemed pretty happy. here we have artemis, flora, boo and bean, all pickpockets! i made a terrible mistake and forgot to take a picture of j , who was a salt shaker.
